Lokua Kanza (nacido en abril de 1958) es un cantante, compositor, y compositor de la República Democrática del Congo. Es conocido por su alma, folksy sonido, que es atípico de la pista de baile de amistad soukous música que es común en el Congo.

Lokua Kanza nació Pascal Lokua Kanza en Bukavu, en la provincia de Sud-Kivu, en la parte oriental de la República Democrática del Congo. Él es el mayor de ocho hijos, con un mongo padre y una tutsi madre de Ruanda. En 1964, la familia se fue a vivir en Kinshasa, en una zona de clase media, hasta el día en que el padre de Pascal, un capitán del buque, murieron. Su madre se trasladó a una zona mucho más pobre de la ciudad, y Pascal, el mayor, tuvo que trabajar para alimentar a la familia. Por lo tanto, iban a la escuela a tiempo parcial, y tuvo pequeños trabajos, así como cantar en las iglesias. Lokua Kanza canta en francés, swahili, lingala, y Inglés.

Plus Vivant (2005, Universal)Lokua Kanza nació en 1961, en Bukavo, en el entonces llamado Congo Belga. Más tarde el país se llamaría Zaire y, en la actualidad, República Democrática del Congo. De madre ruandesa y padre zaireño, en términos musicales Lokua se vio influenciado por ambos: las percusiones proceden del pueblo de mi padre, que está en la región ecuatorial que pueblan los mongos. Es un pueblo guerrero, de ritmos fuertes. De pequeño escuchaba los cánticos de su madre, melodías con influencias indias y del mundo árabe. Kanza compone en inglés y en francés, pero fundamentalmente canta en lingala y swahili, las lenguas de su madre y su padre respectivamente.
Sus inicios se remontan a los años 70, cuando estudió guitarra clásica en el conservatorio de Kinshasa. En 1980, cuando tenía diecinueve años, se integró en la orquesta de Abeti como guitarrista. Esto fue de capital importancia en sus inicios puesto que, en esa época, Abeti era la primera dama de la música zaireña y sus éxitos sonaban en toda África. En su orquesta Lokua tocó por primera vez una guitarra eléctrica. En 1984 se trasladó a Francia y estudió en el C.I.M, la escuela de Jazz de París.
Entre los años 1985 y 1988 fue guitarrista y cantante de Ray Lema, quien lo introdujo en los ambientes de la world music parisinos. Juntos produjeron el LP Bwana Zulú Gang. Ese mismo año colaboró con Papa Wemba y Sixun. A principios de los 90 trabajó con Manu Dibango y, en 1992, fue telonero de Angelique Kidjo en el Olimpia de París.
En 1993 ninguna discográfica se atrevió a publicar su primer disco, eminentemente acústico, no lo suficientemente africano y con algunas reminiscencias pop. Lokua lo publicó con sus propios medios y el debut del álbum Lokua Kanza fue lleno absoluto en el auditórium de Halles en Paris. En 1994 firmó un contrato con RCA/BMG; el álbum se distribuyó por el mundo y ganó el premio al mejor álbum africano en los African Music Awards. En ese año también fue telonero de Youssou NDour en Paris y Nueva York, y co-produjo Emotion de Papa Wemba.
En 1996, año en el que editó Wapi Yo, Kanza realizó en una gira internacional y compuso junto a Jean Claude Petit la banda sonora de la película Saraka Bö de Denis Amar. Tres años más tarde, en 1999, Lokua se encerró en el estudio Piccolo de París y el resultado fue su tercer disco, 3. De este álbum Lokua comentó: quiero mostrarle al mundo todo lo que es universal en mí, pero también lo que es mi intimidad, lo que pienso y siento. Compartir con todos la cultura de mi país, el Congo.
Aclamado en países tan disímiles como Japón, España, Canadá, Israel o Las Filipinas; portada de la revista The Bulletin; colaborador de numerosos artistas internacionales; Lokua Kanza aún tiene aliento para afirmar que vender discos está muy bien, pero también quiero contribuir a abrir orejas y ojos.
